Brooklyn Nets plan to match any ‘realistic’ offer sheet for RFA Cam Johnson

The Brooklyn Nets have some tough decisions to make this summer starting with the 2023 NBA Draft on June 22. However, one of the other decisions that they have to consider is how much they want to pay to keep restricted free-agent Cam Johnson on the roster for the 2023-24 season and beyond.

According to Yahoo! Sports’ Jake Fischer, Brooklyn plans to match any offer sheet given to Johnson as long as it is realistic. Johnson, 27, came to the Nets at the trade deadline in February as part of the Kevin Durant deal. Once he came to Brooklyn, the former North Carolina Tar Heel showed what he could do on both ends of the floor when given more of a role to fulfill.

Johnson went from averaging 13.9 points per game with the Phoenix Suns to averaging 16.6 points per contest in 25 games with the Nets. Johnson shot a similar shooting percentage from the field (46.8%) to what he did in Phoenix (47.4%), but his three-point percentage regressed with Brooklyn (37.2%) far from what he was shooting with the Suns (45.5%).

The Athletic’s Alex Schiffer reported in early May that Johnson’s camp was expecting him to command a contract of more than $20 million per year. He also reported in that piece that Brooklyn had no intention of letting Johnson walk in free-agency.
